Jon Kelly’s (Hyperlinks) analysis backs this up:
“One example is from a recent analysis of nearly two million sessions that showed 72 percent of ChatGPT citations come from short answer capsules placed right after an H2 question. These capsules are usually around a sentence long and contain no hyperlinks at all. It surprised me at first, but it makes sense. When the text is self-contained and not trying to send the user somewhere else, the LLM sees it as a complete answer. Adding proprietary data on top of that, even a single branded stat or benchmark, increases the chances of being cited even more.”

- Follow with structured support: Bullet lists, numbered steps, short tables, FAQ schema.
- Standardize terminology and entity names across your site: One clear product name, one category descriptor, repeated everywhere.
Pattern #2: Operational, “boringly specific” content beats polished marketing
What they’re seeing?

Gary Gilkison (Riverbase):
- SaaS client had zero LLM mentions until they rewrote docs to answer explicit “how do I…” questions with before/after metrics in the first 100 words.
- Publishing “boring operational stuff” (implementation processes, onboarding checklists, edge-case FAQs) outperformed polished top-of-funnel content.
